Mississippi State's offseason has a particularly irritating piece of film attached to it: the point at which a trip to Omaha seemed close enough to reach out and grab.
I would understand a fan watching that inning several times. I would also recommend eventually stepping away from the remote.
For 2027, the useful question is what survives from a very good season and what improves enough to finish the next important weekend.
The ending was painful because the season mattered
State finished 43-19 after Georgia won the deciding super-regional game 11-9 in ten innings. Jacob Parker's second homer of that game had given the Bulldogs a 9-8 lead in the eighth. They were six outs from Omaha.
That is evidence that this team could compete at a high level. It is also a reminder that a late lead needs more than good intentions to become a postseason win.
I am not reducing an entire season to a bullpen complaint. A chaotic elimination game contains plenty of causes. My forward-looking question is whether the next staff can create more dependable options when a game changes shape.
Parker makes the offensive case interesting
The school's Freshman All-America announcement credits Parker with a .339 average, 18 home runs and 62 RBI in 2026. He was also the Starkville Regional's most outstanding player. That is an unusually substantial freshman season.
The next step I want to follow is how his at-bats develop as opponents treat him as a central problem. Can he keep accepting the walk when pitchers are careful? Can the hitters around him turn that caution into a disadvantage?
I like a lineup where the best hitter does not have to win every argument personally. If Parker is getting pitched around, the next hitter should have a chance to make that strategy expensive.
That would make State's offense easier to trust across three games, rather than only when its most dangerous swing shows up.
The pitching optimism has identifiable names
Ryan McPherson and Tomas Valincius were selected for USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team for the July event in Taiwan. Both threw scoreless innings during the selection camp. Jack Bauer and Parker also participated in camp.
That is meaningful summer context. It is not a preapproved 2027 rotation. My interest is how that experience translates into dependable innings, especially command after an early mistake.
The pitching development I would most like to see is a staff that can recover within an inning. A walk followed by another walk can turn a manageable problem into a bullpen meeting remarkably quickly.
The calendar provides several checkpoints
The SEC announcement opens league play with Missouri at home, followed by a trip to Georgia. Brian O'Connor's first State season included a 16-14 conference record and a hosted regional. The Athens return should attract attention without requiring us to call it a referendum on the entire program.
Earlier, State faces Dallas Baptist, UCLA and Wake Forest in Arlington March 5-7. I want to learn how the staff handles three different lineups on consecutive days.
The fall exhibitions bring Auburn and Southern Miss in Biloxi, Western Kentucky in Jackson, Tennessee, and Little Rock at Dudy Noble Field. Repeated chances to evaluate roles should be useful, provided we remember that exhibition workloads are managed.
My position: there is substance behind State's optimism, especially the young offensive production and the national-team pitching experience. The condition is enough depth and control to preserve what the lineup creates.
Getting close deserves respect. Turning the next opportunity into six actual outs deserves the attention this fall.
